Daniel Johnston's latest, Beam me Up
One hurdle that many a- would be Johnston fan fails to get over is the lo-fi nature of a large portion of his catalog. Some of his greatest songs, which have been covered by innumerable bands, exist (as sung by Daniel) only as rough, scratchy tape recordings. Perhaps asking the long call for him to rerecord some of his old material, Beam me Up is a greatest hits collection of sorts, with Johnston backed by an 11 piece jazz band! Johnston's voice is as . . . well . . . its as Daniel Johnston-esque, as ever, but the higher production value supporting his ever-fragile lyrics and melodies will be lauded by many. More importantly, the new sounds and textures of the backing jazz band offer new depths to familiar tunes
You should go buy it
